Menominee has a City Manager / City Council form of government. A nine member City Council sets policy while day-to-day business affairs and city operations are directed by the City Manager. The City Manager is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the City Council. All city departments then report to the City Manager.
The city is divided into four voting wards, with each ward having two Council members. There is a city election every two years. All Council members are elected for four year terms, and they have revolving terms. Therefore, one Council member from each ward comes up for election at each city election. The Mayor is elected by all voters and represents the town on an at-large basis. The Mayor also serves a four year term.
The City Council meets on the third Monday of each month at 6:00 pm at City Hall. Most months, there is also a Committee of the Whole meeting at which Council members may discuss issues, ask questions, etc but can take no action. The time and dates of those meetings can vary, but public notices are issued five days in advance and also on this website.
There are many opportunities for citizens to become involved in local government: Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Condemnation Board, Board of Review, and others. All you have to do is let us know you are interested. Chances are, we can find a spot where your help is needed.
